The 2011 earthquake destroyed large areas of Christchurch. Not all areas were equally affected. The city center was pretty smashed up and so was a residential area north east of the center. The ground hat sunken half a meter and is now prone to flooding of the nearby river. The land was bought by the government and declared as "red zone". No more building to be built there for a while. All the houses were taken down. What remains now are roads that lead nowhere, pedestrian paths, power cables, road signs, fruit trees. What once was a lively place is now deserted.
